One of Thailand's most popular beach destinations is the island of Phuket, just one hour's flight south of Bangkok.

Some of the finest beaches in Asia are complimented by lush green hills, coconut groves, runner plantations and a spectacular choice of resort hotels.

Patong Beach is the most developed area and will suite those looking for a kaleidoscope of attractions, while most of the other beaches offer a quieter retreat away from the crowds.

Numerous international resorts have been developed on the island but Phuket still offers some delightful secluded hotels often with added bonus of courtesy shuttle buses to the neon nightlife of Patong Beach.

Andaman Cannacia - 3 star

Location:
Situated on a hill just 500 metres from Kata Beach with views of the ocean. The resort is 40 minutes fron Phuket airport. 20 minutes from Patong and a short walk from the town of Kata with its plentiful bars and restaurants.

Opinion:
This is the ideal location for those lookin gfor plenty to do without being in the heart of the action 24 hours a day. The Banyan Restaurant derves delicious seafood, Thai sishes and international cuisine or guests can enjoy a BBQ at the poolside.

Rydges Beach Resort - 3 Star

Locatoin:
A well established beachfront resort set in large attractive grounds, shaded by coconut palms and casuarina trees on Bang Tao Bay, close to, but seperate from the integrated Laguna resorts complex..

Opinion:
The size of the groungs gives the hotel a peaceful relaxed atmosphere.
There are two restaurants - Garden Cafe serves international cuisine and other specialities in Thai seafood - three bars two large free-form swimming pools an outdoor jacuzzzi and alarge range of non motorised watersports are available from the beach.

Cape Panwa Hotel - 3 Star

Location:
Set on a hill top, tucked away in a cove with a secluded beach frontage at the southermost tip of Phuket's east coast, Cape Panwa is a long time favourite among British visitors and about one hours drive from the airport.

Opinion:
Its location here means that the sea is calm even in the monsoon season. (although it is not often possible to swim at low tide because of the offshore coral reeds). the secluded beach is sandy and given shade by the coconut grove.

Central Karon Village- 3 Star

Location:
This hotel opened at the end of 1999 and is set on a hill- overlooking the majestic sweep of Karon Bay just a short drive away from the nightlife of Patong and about 40 minutes drive from the airport.

Opinion:
All guestrooms face the sea ensuring that great views across the bay through the foliage. Due to the steep slopes of the hill this resort is not suited for the less mobile. the hotel does not have its own beach but is 200 metres from Karon Beach, a 4 minute walk by pathway.

Amari Coral Beach resort - 4 Star

Location:
Situated on a secluded beach and spread across 72 hectres with panoramic vieiws over Patong Bay. Part of the popular Amari chain this hotel is located about 30 minutes drive from the airport, but just a few minutes from numerous entertainment, shopping and eating possibilities of Patong.

Opinion:
This is an unsuitable property for the less mobile as it is on a hillside and has lots of steps. The Lomtalay restaurant offers Thai and international cuisine, the Beach Reataurant serves an abundance of freshly caought seafood while snacks and cocktails are served at the Sunset Cafe

The Chedi - 4 Star

Location:
The Chedi is nestled in the peaceful seclusion of Phuket Pansea Bay overlooking the Andaman Sea about 25 drive from the airport.

Opinion:
It is managed by the GHM renowned for the style and innovations they bring to theit hotels and hence the Cheda has a very romantic atmosphere. Due to the number of steps the property is not suitable for the less mobile.

Dusit Laguna Resort - 4 Star

Location:
The hotel is part of the fully iontegrated resort com-plex on a 2.5 Km stretch of sansy beach an Bang Tao Bay, about 20 minutes drive from the airport. The Laguna complex offers the facilities of five deluxe hotels, a golf course and spas all interconnected by shuttle bus and water taxi. The hotel buildings are designed in traditional Thai style and are set in large grounds.

Opinion:
Restaurants include the Laguna Cafe for air-conditioned or al-feesco dining, Ruen Thai for local specialities accompanied by classical Thai music.

Banyan Tree - 5 Star

Location:
The banyan Tree is part of the Laguna complex of resorts and facilities on Bang Tao Bay 20 minutes drive from the airport.

Opinion:
It has a tranquil atmosphere, a fabulous spa and is designed for those seeking an escape from the outside world. It is popular amiong couples and honeymooners and you can expect a beautifully appointed villa superb facilities and pampering service.
