Just two kilometres off the mainland of Malaysia lies the colourful and scenic island of Penang, often referred to as the 'Pearl of the Orient'.

Penang offers miles of golden sandy beaches most famous of which is the Batu Ferringhi, on the northern coastline, where the majority of the hotel development has taken place.

Away from the beaches there is a wealth of multi-cultural heritage to be explored. In 1786 Penang was established as the first British trading post in the Far East and quickly attracted people from all over Asia.

Modern Penang retains these influences especially obvious Chinese flavour than Hong Kong or Singapore.

Right in the heart of Batu Ferringhi with the night market on the doorstep. The hotel is split into two wings - the beach wing which faces directly onto sandy Batu Ferringhi beach and the Ocean Tower on the opposite side of the road. The two wings are linked via a walkway;

Opinion:
These include the attractive, open sided Terrace Cafe that overlooks the pool, the Garden Cafe and alobby lounge. The largebeachfront lap-style pool is complimented by a kids' pool.

Restaurants include Tiffin for the best of East and West the relaxed and inviting Gion for Japanese food and the Taman Coffee House for continental dishes and breakfast. There are also several bars and a pub.

Opinion:
Restaurants include Sigi's by the Sea for casual and colourful open-air dining, Peppinos for Italian cuisine, the Al Frecso Garden Cafe, Sunset Lounge for drinks and cocktails and Kuda Laut Poolside Bar.

Fierst opened in 1885 and situated on Farquhar Street in the heart of colonial Georgetown, the capital of Penang. The Eastern and Oriental Hotel stands alongside Raffles Hotel Singapore. The Oriental and Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor is one of the great historical hotels of Asia.

Opinion:
The hotel opened in 2000 after a multi-million- dollar refurbishment which saw it painstakingly restored to its former glory whilst retaining the hotels hallmark of personalised and hospilality. The dining possiblities are plentiful from 1885 a period restaurant serving contempory cuisine.
