It's not for nothing that this 125 mile long chain
of little islands are often described as jewels.
The sea is always so close on both sides that the
Keys really do seem to sparkle. The light is different
here, brighter than you will have ever seen, and
slightly magical.
The people are laid back, and so are the animals,
it seems - lazy deer and alligators saunter across
the road as drivers wait patiently, glad for the
experience. The sub tropical climate is slightly
Caribbean, but the Keys are really like nowhere
else. They have their own special atmosphere.
From the fishing, diving, snorkelling and glass-bottom
boating of Key Largo with its underwater coral state
park, to the 'Conch Republic' of kooky Key West
where artists and authors have always come to play,
there is a whole world of interesting experiences
to be had along this whole chain.
Floating casinos, homely inns, wildlife refuges,
great seafood restaurants and wonderful, interesting
people are what you will find. Make sure you go
to Key West - it's right at the end of the chain,
only 90 miles from Cuba, and a variety of ancestors
(including Cockney wreckers from the Bahamas!) have
created an eclectic, fun-loving community.
There's a sophisticated gay scene, lots of interesting
cultural sights, and fantastic nightlife along famous
Duval Street. |
